- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the anti-oath passage found in the Sermon on the Mount given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:35. Topics addressed include various critical interpretations surrounding the specific authorship of the four rhetorical amplifications surrounding the command in the text, the socio-political context surrounding the command, and the meaning of the concept of the "Great King" seen in antiquity.
