- Abstract
Don Quixote of La Mancha, the first modern roman, was brought to Albanian in the 20th century, four centuries after it was originally published. This piece brought the nascence of a new genre, full of novelty. Importantly, the departure from the rigid schemes of the time towards the freedom of the characters, the author and the reader, as the creative process according to Cervantes is an adventure with many unknowns. The author discusses numerous issues of the literature theory in the roman, during the conversations of the characters, which in synthesis are his concepts on the contemporary literature and its evolution. The mark of Don Quixote on the Albanian literature has yet to be studied, while the Albanian literary critic sees the grotesque as the main representation of the piece, which has influenced the literature in the communist era. Several authors, in their works have been influenced by Cervantes. The relationship of Quixote with the Albanians is a special one as he is known by everyone regardless if the person has read the book, to Albanians he has become a hero but, he is seen as separate from the author. His name has been, and is still used to label people, actions and certain behaviours. Politics uses the name for negative connotations, whereas the art world sees the idealist who tries to change the world in Quixote. The philosophy that the character embodies is named Quixotism. On Cervantes there is currently much debate on the fact if he spent his captivity in the Albanian regions, part of Montenegro when he was captivated by the pirate Arnaut Mami and if the name he gave to Quixote's lover, Dulcinea is taken from the mane of the city Ulcinj.
