- Abstract
The Festival of Shavuot has a dual nature: on the one hand, as the harvest festival, it is associated with the primordial experience of agriculture and nature; on the other, it receives religious and spiritual significance through its connection to the giving of the Torah. Over the years, the agrarian nature of the festival, as a celebration of the harvest (the time of year when Bikkurim were brought to the Temple) has been sidelined. However, it would seem that this agricultural aspect has found expression in the custom of decorating the synagogues and houses with different plants: roses, various spices, herbs, water plants, thistles, etc. In this article, We wished to present an overview of these customs: to examine their roots, remark on different aspects mentioned in halachik and academic literature, and describe their aesthetic manifestation in art over the centuries.
