- Title
Reason and the Bible in the So-Called Age of Reason.
- Authors
Schwarzbach, Bertram Eugene
- Abstract
An essay is presented on French Enlightenment interpretations of reason and irrationality in the Bible. According to the author, radical philosophers such as Voltaire, Hermann Samuel Reimarus, and Gabrielle-Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, marquise du Châtelet-Lomond, came to believe that faith in Christianity necessitated the suspension of rational thought. Topics discussed include Horatian concepts of decorum and order and biblical scholar Antoine Augustin Calmet.
