- Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the attitude toward homosexuals held by heterosexuals. We particularly focused attention on the assessors' gender and age. The study was of a self-reported survey type. There were two age-groups of participants; old persons aged 70-85 and young persons aged 18-23 years. Each group consisted of 60 persons, with equal representation of males and females. The psychometric tool consisted of the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men (ATLG) scale by G.M. Herek of the University of California. Firstly, the attitude scores of the age-pooled groups of women and men assessing homosexuals of both sexes together were elaborated. The data were then broken down by gender and age of the assessors regarding the level of prejudice separately against lesbians and gay men. The findings were that, overall, women's attitude toward homosexuals was more permissive than that of men, irrespective of age. However, the old women and also men had more stringent views on homosexuals than their young counterparts. In detail, old women, in relation to young ones, showed a higher level of prejudice against gay men, and old men, conversely, against lesbians. Young people also showed somehow higher, but gender-unrelated, less tolerant stance toward gay men than lesbians. In conclusion, homophobic attitude increases in old age and there appears a kind of self-gender tolerance to homosexuals, which underscores the subjective inconsistency of homophobic views.
