- Abstract
In this study, the effects of the STEM (Science-Technology- Mathematics-Engineering) activities on the academic achievement of the prospective teachers were investigated on the topics of Impulse- Momentum. In the study, semi-experimental model with pre-test and post-test control group was used. During the application step of the research, Impulse-Momentum subject was processed in STEM activities approach to the students in the experimental group. In the control group, the lessons were carried out with the traditional teaching method. The application was carried out in the fall semester of 2017- 2018 academic year. The study group is comprised of second grade students in Elementary Mathematics Education who take Physics I course in a state university. "Impulse-Momentum Achievement Test" was used as the data collection tool. SPSS 22.0 statistical program was used to analyze the data obtained during the study. In order to determine the normal distribution of the collected data and to determine which statistical analysis is appropriate, the skewness and kurtosis coefficients of the distribution were analyzed. it was decided that the data showed normal distribution, then parametric tests (paired samples t test, independent samples t test) were used to determine the significance levels of the differences between the averages for the variables. According to the findings obtained in the study, there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of the academic achievements of Impulse-Momentum subjects before the application. After the application, it was determined that both groups developed according to pre-application. However, it was determined that the experimental group in which STEM activities were performed showed a statistically significant improvement compared to the control group after the application.
