- Abstract
We thank Prof. De Santis and colleagues for their interest in our systematic review on the role of valacyclovir in preventing vertical transmission and adverse perinatal outcome in pregnancies complicated by maternal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection[1]. The findings from our systematic view and meta-analysis demonstrate that prenatal valacyclovir therapy following maternal CMV infection reduces the risk of congenital CMV infection and increases the likelihood of congenital CMV infection being asymptomatic. However, the potential severe morbidity associated with CMV infection is likely to outweigh the reversible side effects related to valacyclovir administration in pregnancy.
