- Title
FACTITIOUS PURPURA.
- Authors
Yates, Victoria M.
- Abstract
The article deals with the emerging problem in dermatology named as factitious purpura. This form of mechanical purpura, often caused by suction, may be deliberately or unknowingly induced by the patient. A well-documented and very striking form of factitious purpura is that caused by sucking air out of a drinking glass placed over the chin and lower lip. This type of deliberately self-inflicted purpura is similar in etiology to dermatitis artefacta and may be an indication of underlying emotional disturbance and require appropriate therapy. Suction purpura has also been reported following the application of rubber tipped suckers to the forehead producing the so-called "cyclops" or "sucker daddy" purpura.
