- Authors
Krylov, Anna I.; Tanzman, Jay S.; Frenking, Gernot; Gill, Peter M. W.
- Abstract
The article emphasizes that science should reject all forms of censorship and defend the core principle of science - the free exchange of ideas. It is pointed out that censorship has been used by illiberal regimes to suppress diversity of opinion. Historical examples of scientists who contradicted dominant ideologies are mentioned, such as Socrates, Galileo, Bruno, Copernicus, and Darwin. The article also highlights the contemporary form of censorship, "Cancel Culture," in which social media serves as a tool for excluding and punishing individuals deemed offensive or objectionable. The article calls on the scientific community to resist this form of censorship and defend freedom of expression.
