- Abstract
The exploration of Marxist-inspired movements and intellectuals in Arab societies is gaining popularity. Arab contemporary history must be examined taking into account the suppression of leftist forces by authoritarian regimes and their Western allies during the Cold War. Research on the adaptation of leftist ideologies and the permeability of conflicting ideologies helps to avoid a limited perspective on the region and religion. The study of Arab leftists brings to light neglected aspects of intellectual and cultural history, but also reveals the ambivalences of leftist politics and alliance-building. Research on Marxism in Arab and African countries remains a challenge. The article also addresses the difficulties faced by Arab leftists after the death of Nasser in 1970 and the discussion on Islamic heritage and cultural self-affirmation. It also touches upon the conversion of some leftist intellectuals and fighters from Maoism to Islamism.
