- Abstract
The extrusion process is one of the most used in the industrial sector for the transformation of thermoplastic polymers. This study addressed principles of polymeric material processing, to design and build a laboratory-scale mini extruder for recycling polymeric materials by students of the Materials Engineering course at the Federal University of Amazonas - UFAM. To analyze the efficiency of the mini extruder, High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) and Polypropylene (PP) granules were extruded. The optical micrographs showed that the processing of the thermoplastics was efficient and that there was the formation of a polymer blend PP / HIPS, stable and free of pores, voids or cracks. The absorption spectra in the infrared showed a significant reduction in the peaks referring to the HIPS and PP thermoplastics after processing in the mini extruder, evidencing broken bonds, may be related to the degradation of the thermoplastic polymers under study.
