- Abstract
This paper deals with how the formal and informal forms of communication in the relationship between a therapist and a client influence the therapeutic relationship. The Slovenian language in common with German and French has a formal 'you' and an informal 'you'. In any relationship we can either use the formal or the informal way of communication. In the current accepted etiquette, the formal way of communication is more appropriate in business communications and there are rules on how, if it becomes appropriate, to change to the informal form of communication. The therapeutic relationship differs from other business relationships and it influences the therapeutic process. It contributes up to 30% to the success of the therapy. Our research hypothesis was that the informal way of communicating inside the therapeutic relationship enables a better therapeutic relationship. We looked at the individual attitude toward formal and informal communication, the attitude toward authority, the attitude toward self and toward others, how the professional relationship is perceived, the expression of emotions and the understanding of personal boundaries. This research is based on the Transactional Analysis approach to psychotherapy which gave us a solid ground for the composition of a questionnaire. We made two different questionnaires: one for the clients and one for the therapists. Through the interpretation of the results we could show the experiences and needs that both sides in therapy have. The results show that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is no less professional if informal communication is used. The change from formal to informal communication is the task of the therapist and he should assess when the right moment to make this shift is the most appropriate and he should do it in consensus with the client.
