- Abstract
Literature is scant on suicidal behaviours and their correlates in developing countries, including Vietnam. The objectives of the study were to estimate the suicidal ideation rate and determine its associated factors. Proportions of exposure factors were estimated using weighted frequencies and logistic regression analyses (bivariate and multivariate) were weighted to establish significant factors associated with suicidal ideation. Unadjusted odds ratio (OR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) together with their 95% confidence intervals (CI) are reported. Altogether, 3331 students participated in the survey. Overall, 16.9% (12.2% of male and 21.1% of female) students reported suicidal ideation. Factors associated with suicidal ideation were age, gender (male gender: AOR = 0.64; 95% CI [0.63, 0.64]), food security (no food security: AOR = 0.68; 95% CI [0.67, 0.69]), loneliness (AOR = 1.82; 95% CI [1.81, 1.83]), close friends (no close friends: AOR = 1.65; 95% CI [1.64, 1.66]), truancy, bullied, attacked, in a fight (AOR = 1.22; 95% CI [1.21, 1.22]), currently smoked cigarettes (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI [1.39, 1.41]), used marijuana (AOR = 0.73; 95% CI [0.72, 0.74]), currently consumed alcohol, alcohol abuse (AOR = 1.45; 95% CI [1.45, 1.46]) and parental understanding (AOR = 0.70; 95% CI [0.70, 0.71]). The prevalence of suicidal ideation in Kuwait among adolescents is high. The suicidal ideation rate in Vietnam is of concern. Interventions should be designed using information obtained in this study and implemented to lower the rate of suicidal thoughts.
