- Title
On Chen Yinke’s Two Essays about Tang Tales.
- Authors
Xiaoju Liu
- Abstract
In his two pioneer essays on Tang tales, modern scholar Chen Yinke (1890–1969) noted a close relationship between Tang tales and the contemporary Archaic Prose Movement led by Han Yu (768–824). Although his conclusions have been challenged by many scholars, they still have influence. Chen’s main arguments were that Han Yu was fond of Tang tales, and that some of his works, such as Mao Ying Chuan [“Biography of Fur Point” = MYC), resembled Tang tales. By re-examining Chen’s arguments, this article challenges and reframes his understanding of the origin and contemporaneous differentiation of Tang tales.
