- Abstract
This presentation summarizes the findings of the Elective Medications and Procedures Subcommittee of the recent Workshop of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society, entitled "A Lifestyle Epidemic: Ocular Surface Disease" (www.tearfilm.org). Elective medications and/or procedures are "elected" by patients to improve disease and/or cosmetic appearance to enhance quality of life. They include topical ophthalmic and periocular medications, systemic medications, ophthalmic surgical procedures of the peri‐orbit, the lids, the conjunctiva, the cornea as well as the lens, non‐ophthalmic surgical procedures such as neurosurgery, bariatric surgery and radiation, and a number of non‐surgical ophthalmic procedures and devices. This report describes the impact of these medications and/or procedures on the ocular surface, discusses possible pathogenetic mechanisms involved, and proposes management options.
