This article examines issues of gender and masculinity in the poetry and criticism of Matthew Arnold, with particular emphasis on his book "Culture and Anarchy." The author analyzes the tension between competing ideals of masculinity in Arnold's writings, as exemplified by the work of John Henry Newman, an influential priest, and Arnold's father, Thomas.
