- Abstract
The article discusses republican rhetoric and discourse in France from 1885 to 1914, focusing on the republican newspaper "La Petite République," founded by French statesmen and founder of the Third Republic Léon Gambetta, and the socialist newspaper "l’Humanité," founded by French Socialist Party leader Jean Jaurès. It examines the association of republicanism with nationalism and patriotism. The author also comments on references to country and to the French Revolution, various political scandals and affairs, and a rhetoric of a peace and prosperity.
