- Abstract
Intestinal mucormycosis complicated by iliac artery aneurysm and ureteric rupture in a child with new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare and potentially fatal complication of paediatric diabetic ketoacidosis. Mucormycosis is a potentially fatal complication of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).1 Rhino-cerebral infection is the most common type in children with DM but rarely other types such as cutaneous, pulmonary, gastrointestinal (GI) and disseminated forms can also be seen.1 Primary GI infection is exceedingly rare and is often fatal.1 We report the first case of successful management of a child presenting with severe DKA with multiorgan failure, who developed intestinal mucormycosis complicated by mycotic right common iliac artery aneurysm. Discussion We describe a very rare case of GI mucormycosis in a child with T1DM, the first case of GI mucormycosis complicated by mycotic aneurysm and perforation of ureter in a child and survival after this combination of problems.
