- Abstract
In "Human Rights and Transnational Democracy in South Korea" by Ingu Hwang, the author explores the transnational nature of South Korea's democratization movement. Hwang highlights the lack of support from the US government and emphasizes the role of the Korean people in the success of the movement. The book discusses how non-state actors in Korea contributed to transforming the global human rights landscape and how democracy activists adopted the language of the international human rights movement to state their grievances. Hwang also examines the US and South Korean governments' policies in response to growing pressures from civil society. While the book misses some opportunities to discuss changes in US policy and the relationship between human rights and democratization, it is a well-researched addition to the study of Korean contemporary history.
