- Abstract
This article examines the interest of author Willa Cather in the concept of solitary women in literature. According to the author, few female characters in literature find self discovery in solitude. The author presents chronicles of male experiments in antidomestic withdrawal, paradigms of fictional portrayals of female solitaries, and literature's emphasis on the domestic life as a central subject in Cather's writing. The works of author Sarah Orne Jewett, including "The Country of the Pointed Firs," are discussed. The author analyzes the books "My Ántonia," "Shadows on the Rock," and "Sapphira and the Slave Girl."
