- Abstract
The aim of our work is the contrastive study between Italian and Spanish of the temporal, aspectual and modal values of three verbal forms: the imperfect, the simple past and the conditional. We will see that the imperfect and the simple past, or passato remoto according to the Italian terminology, exhibit a behavior very close in Italian and Spanish, both from the temporal-aspectual viewpoint and from the modal point of view. Differently to these two tenses, the conditional presents more differences between the two languages. The explanation of this contrast will be based on different etymology of this tense in both languages, and for this reason we will see that it must be connected to the temporal, aspectual and modal values of the other two forms being studied in this work: the imperfect and the simple past.
