A literary criticism of the poem "Paradise Lost" by the English poet John Milton is presented. Topics covered include critic John Carey's replacement of roughly two thirds of the poem with his own prose summaries in "The Essential Paradise Lost." Also discussed are reader responses to the poem that were contradictory to aspects of its theodicy.
