- Title
The goose (oesophagus) still honks!
- Authors
Jr, Frank A Baciewicz
- Abstract
The article discusses the incidence of pulmonary complications following oesophagectomy for oesophageal carcinoma. The authors present their findings from a study on minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIE) patients, showing that postoperative respiratory failure (PRF) can be predicted and that MIE has significantly reduced its incidence to 2.4%. The authors compare their results to previous studies and highlight the rates of anastomotic leaks and recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries. They also mention the challenges in predicting PRF risk due to various factors, such as operative time and neoadjuvant therapy. The article concludes that while MIE has shown lower complication rates, further improvements are needed.
