The author reflects on the formation of large scale purchasing contracts for medical equipment in Canada. Topics discussed include saving of big amount of money by Canadian government which took restriction of implants to a single device approach for pacemaker purchasing, decline in market competition if exclusive contracts are given to a single manufacturer and limitation to surgical options imposed by one-implant-fits-all approach discouraging innovative technology.
