Shielding the Media: In an Age of Bloggers, Tweeters, and Leakers, Will Congress Succeed in Defining the Term "Journalist" and in Passing a Long-Sought Federal Shield Act?
- Authors
RUSSELL, LAUREN J.
- Abstract
The author argues that a proposed U.S. federal shield law for news reporters is a positive step towards the goal of codifying a journalist's privilege and encouraging the nation's mass media industry to function without fear of prosecution for keeping confidential sources as of 2014. The legal rights of bloggers and information leakers are examined, along with American press law and the U.S. Congress' efforts to define the term journalist and pass the country's Free Flow of Information Act.
