- Abstract
The article discusses research on the effectiveness of the Amplatzer patent foramen ovale (PFO) occluder in preventing recurrent stroke. A total of 980 patients were grouped into medical therapy alone or closure of the PFO. Serious adverse events were observed in 23 percent of patients in the closure group and in 21.6 percent in the medical therapy group. It was found that there was no significant benefit associated with closure of the PFO.
