- Title
Outwitting Shoplifters.
- Abstract
This article discusses the security devices utilized by retailers to protect their merchandise from shoplifters in the U.S. as of 1991. Based on the findings of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were 1.2 million shoplifting incidents in 1990, an increase from 1.1 million in 1989. Shoplifting accounts for 16% of all reported larcenies. Shrinkage, the term retailers use for shoplifting and theft by employees is equal to about 2% of sales in the average department store. Some store departments have higher shrinkage than others. According to a loss-prevention survey by Ernst & Young, 7.6% occurs in women's fashion accessories and costume jewelry. The shrinkage rate for women's apparel is 2.4% and 1.8% for men's apparel and shoes.
