- Title
Mauve 1856: PERKIN'S PURPLE AND WHERE IT LED.
- Authors
Travis, Anthony S.
- Abstract
The article presents a historical background on the discovery of chemist William Henry Perkin that benzene extracted out of coal tar could be transformed into purple colorant for textiles. During the years following his discovery, new synthetic dyes were discovered and the colorants stimulated the emergence of a science-based chemical industry, forced changes in patent law and decimated the cultivation of dye-yielding plants. The discovery stimulated investigations into reactions of aniline that might yield other colorants.
