- Abstract
The lecture series "Sustainability" at the University of Passau in the winter semester of 2023/24 focused on West Africa. Speakers from academia and practice shed light on various aspects of migration and sustainable development in West Africa. Migration is a daily occurrence in West Africa and shapes life in rural regions and cities with social, economic, and ecological impacts. The joint project "Migration and Translocality in West Africa," funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, systematically analyzes these interconnections. Climate change usually does not lead to mass migration from affected areas, but rather small-scale farmers rely on translocal livelihood systems. The migration of a few household members enables the staying of many. The lecture series is a collaboration between the BMBF project "Migration and Translocality in West Africa," the Chair of Geography with a focus on Education for Sustainable Development, and the Sustainability "Hub" of the University of Passau.
