- Abstract
It is possible to date back up to 6th century BC the origins of practices applied by the Turkish Nation, who is one of the most important representatives of the history of Unconventional Warfare. While this form of struggle, which has been practiced in different forms for centuries, had been described with such terms as "gang warfare", "unconventional warfare", "making special organization" and "being in a state of special organization" in the late Ottoman period; it was described as the "gang war", "unconventional warfare" or "making unconventional warfare" during the period of National Struggle. However, a document, dated 2 August 1336 (1920), which was found in the Archives and Military History Department of the Ministry of National Defense, and registered as "the Defending [Last] Article of the Unconventional Warfare Directive", not only opened a new window to the unconventional warfare methods used during the National Struggle period but also shows that the Turkish unconventional warfare terminology is richer than it is believed. When the said document is evaluated together with the Operation of Resistance which was executed during the period of the National Struggle and the orders, circulars, instructions, regulations and laws which were prepared to determine the method of this operation, it can be claimed that Turks were one of the early representatives of unconventional warfare, not only in practical but also in theoretical terms. With reference to a document dated 2 August 1336, in this article prepared to contribute to filling a gap in the literature by examining one of the less known aspects of Turkish Unconventional Warfare in the National Struggle period and to conceptualize the phrase "the unconventional warfare", "historical method" was adopted and "archive research" and "literature review" methods were used as data collection technique.
