- Abstract
Children spend most of their time at school with books. The development of perception towards different family types sometimes emerges through peers and sometimes through textbooks in the school environment. The aim of this study is to reveal how the family structure is reflected in the school books that the students face constantly. The research was carried out with qualitative method and content analysis technique. Based on the categories and codes built upon the Family Strengthening Model developed by the researchers, the texts in the textbooks were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that there were 95 families in 364 texts in 23 primary school books containing texts. It was observed that the distribution of men and women is equal. In the same way, the distribution of male and female children was found to be equal. One family was found in every 4 texts, and these families were found to consist of 3 individuals. It was revealed that 2 of these families are closed families, 1 of them are random families, 15 of them are open families. Sufficient data to describe the family style of 77 families are not included in the texts. In general, it could be concluded that textbooks for primary schools lack reflecting the family concept to children according to the Family Power Development Model. Textbooks are an important material in creating the child's perception regarding family social structure. The intense relationship of children with this material is an opportunity to create an appropriate family figure in the child's mind. It is believed that the concept of family should be included in the books that will be developed in the future in a more appropriate way and in a more intense way.
