I argue that the fear of slander permeates Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and is integral to its plot. Examining Measure for Measure 's portrayal of slander and illicit sex's disruptive effects upon the Viennese community—as well as the necessary yet ineffective responses to these two forces—provides a better understanding of the play.
