- Abstract
This article draws on the preliminary results of an ongoing research project on the "Contribution of the Greeks to the Development of the Azov Port Cities in the Nineteenth Century." It argues that Greeks, with their businesses, both personal and family-based, played a substantial role in the development of the Azov Sea area through their trading expertise and entrepreneurial skills, and that through the grain trade and the provision of transport services they helped to integrate the region into the world economy. Using the port city of Taganrog as an example, the article analyzes its nineteenth-century merchant elite and explores its qualitative features. It offers arguments on the role of the Greeks and their comparative advantages vis à vis other foreign and domestic entrepreneurs. Spatial proximity, geographical mobility, religious affinity, networks based on kinship and a common historical background were some of their most important characteristics.
