- Abstract
This doctoral dissertation is a study of both the work and thinking of John Henry Newman, the approach taken being his theological use of history. First of all, I begin with an introductory chapter with the aim of presenting the features that define Newman as a historian and the more representative elements of his historical method. after this chapter my research focuses on the way Newman turns to history when making theological statements. this use of history, as auxiliary for theology, is verified in three spheres, whom i dealt with each of them in the following chapters: within the field of dogmatic theology and tradition (chapter 2), within the apologetic sphere (chapter 3); and within the reflection of the History of salvation and the theology of religions (chapter 4). throughout this study the following conclusion has been reached: Newman not only appeals to history when dealing with theological subjects like the development of dogma, the inquisition, or the History of salvation; he also utilizes a very innovative theological use of history, which is defined by five characteristic elements: - A constant reference to the Fathers and the History of the church. - The use of a method that combines historical evidence, antecedent considerations, the convergence of the probabilities and the illative sense. - The tendency to adduce historical examples. - The perception of the divine mystery in history. - The invocation of reason and the seeking of arguments and reasonable proofs.
