- Authors
Verven, Nicholas; Schwaab, Edleff; Young, Robert A.
- Abstract
This article focuses on the training of counselors for a treatment camp for emotionally disturbed children. The author contends that cabin counselors are the most important figure in children's summer camp experience. The application for a job as cabin counselor is scrutinized and that its roles and responsibilities include all the functions of supervising campers. Cabin counselors should be surrogate parents, a role model, and a therapist in order to meet properly the needs of these children. Emotional and physical hazards and demands are the biggest challenges for a camp counselor. Importance of paternal and maternal care that a counselor must provide is emphasized.
