- Abstract
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, public dances were usually performed in festivals and holy days. This is as true of the province of Treviso (a territory in the Venetian Republic) as elsewhere in Europe. Dances provided important moments for social interaction and, at the same time, social pollution: frequently they also generated confl icts and violence. These confl icts are analyzed through the study of several fascicoli processuali. The second part of the paper examines the secular and ecclesiastical authorities' attitudes towards dances, through analysis of secular laws and the decreta synodalia emanated by several podestà and bishops of Treviso.
