- Title
St Edmund the Viking Saint.
- Authors
Young, Francis
- Abstract
The article discusses the martyr-cult of Saint Edmund, renown by the Viking invaders in the Danish East Anglia from the time of his death in 869 through 917. It proposes that the beatification of King Edmund led to better relations between the resident Anglo-Saxons and their Danish Viking invaders. Edmund died fighting off the 865 invasion of the Viking "Great Army" after he was tied to a tree, shot with arrows, then decapitated for refusing to become an underking to the Danes.
