- Abstract
Child abuse occurs within a family relationship which is supposed to be the child’s safe and secure base under normal circumstances. In FY2020, the total number of child abuse cases handled by child guidance centers was 205,044, of which 2,245 were sexual abuse cases, accounting for 1% of the total. However, given the tendency that the number of family sexual abuse cases that come to disclosure is particularly small among the child sexual violence cases, in general, this number does not necessarily reflect the actual situation. This is why we need to be attentive to “changes in sexual expression,” which are signs from the children who have been the victims of sexual violence. Sexual abuse (except sexual addiction such as pedophilia and paraphilia) is not only a problem involving the sexual assailants, themselves, but also of family dysfunctions. In the background of sexually abused children, there are often combinations of other types of abuse leading to the sexual abuse, and the non-assailant parent is often in a situation where he or she is unable to protect the child for various reasons. In addition, when sexual abuse occurs among siblings, the sexual assailant child may be under psychological repression due to family pathology. In the case of sexual abuse and domestic sexual violence, we need to pay attention to the family pathology where the children, the most tender-hearted and vulnerable in the family, tend to be the victims, and those who are mentally weak and have approval desire tend to be the assailants. In addition, in a family where sexual abuse exists, every family member is hurt individually. Therefore, it is necessary to keep in mind that the support is given to the entire family.
