- Abstract
Scholars and practitioners have widely discussed the geographically clustered nature of voter preferences in Turkey. Despite the methodological advances, these studies have assumed a cluster specification with the number of clusters being exogenously determined. This study overcomes this limitation, estimates the optimal number of clusters by drawing on the information available from the voter preferences data on June 24, 2018 elections by conducting a two-step cluster analysis. The first step compares the performance of various clustering solutions using the Akaike Information Criterion, and the second step reports the estimates from the best performing specification. The paper finds that voter preferences exhibit a three-cluster pattern and spatial proximity of provinces in clusters indicate the role of geography on voting decisions.
