- Abstract
The term collodion baby applies to newborns whose appear to have an extra layer of skin that has a collodion-like quality. The appearance is often described as a shiny film looking like a layer of Vaseline. The eyelids and mouth may have the appearance of being forced open due to the tightness of the skin. There can be associated eversion of eyelids. The collodion baby is a result of hyperkeratosis caused by an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. Diagnosis relies primarily on the clinical and anamnestic data; but can be confirmed, in certain cases, by biological, histological and genetic tests. Treatment includes in all the cases local cares and emollients. A systemic treatment containing retinoid aromatic per os can be indicated in severe forms. The genetic council is indicated in order to evaluate the risk of recurrence of the disease in the descent. A diagnosis prenatal relies on a fetal cutaneous biopsy or the study of the fetal ADN. Our study brings back seven cases of collodion babies followed in dermatological consultation of child’s hospital of Rabat, including 3 typical cases of collodion baby, 2 forms of lamellar ichthyosis and 2 cases of non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma. All our patients were treated by emollient with daily baths containing disinfectant; and even antibiotics in the case of superinfection. The genetic council is recommended as well as a diagnosis prenatal in the event of new pregnancy.
