ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF INFANT THINKING: SOME PSYCHOANALYTICAL REMARKS.
- Authors
ZEPF, SIEGFRIED; SOLDT, PHILIPP
- Abstract
The authors describe the cognitive development of infants in terms of primary and secondary process, whereby primary process is equated with affect-symbolic and secondary process with concept-symbolic thinking. Using Vygotsky's conceptualization of the development of infant thinking, the authors show how concept-symbolic thinking can unfold itself out of affect-symbolic thinking by way of play-actions that are motivated by the striving to prevent unpleasurable experiences. This development is illustrated by the play of Freud's grandson using a piece of string tied to a cotton reel.
