- Abstract
The article discusses modern and early modern peoples' perceptions of the prehistoric indigenous people of the Balkan Peninsula known as the Illyrians. Particular focus is given to the social construction of the Illyrian people, including in regard to their group identity. Roman relations with the Illyrians, including the latter's participation in Roman legions, are discussed. The role that what are referred to as identity discourses play in the perception of Illyrians is also discussed.
