The authors examine the cold winter condition in the Gulf of Alaska. They explains the role of the El-Niño-Southern Oscillation cycle on the surface of the Gulf of Alaska in winter. The association between the strong Aleutian Lows and warmer sea surface temperature (SST) in the Northeast Pacific is discussed. They note that the cold temperatures in coastal regions are reflected in deeper than average mixed layer depth.
