The author reports on the place the family car has played in the lives of people in the United States. The way cars have impacted the building of roads and freeways in the U.S. is mentioned. The way the structure of the American family has impacted how automobiles have been viewed by people is discussed. The author's opinions regarding the way in which automobiles have been able to fulfill the needs of the family but have been unable to meet the needs of society are discussed. The problem which has arisen regarding the selling of mass transportation to car owners is mentioned.
