- Abstract
Fake news, which is considered one of the main problems of the sports media, is a term used in journalism literature for news that has no relation to reality. Sports journalism is believed to be more prone to ethical violations and less strict in adhering to professional standards. Additionally, the rise of digital journalism has led to an increase in the problem of fake news in sports reporting. Despite numerous studies on journalism, there is limited research on this issue. Therefore, this research project aims to analyze the reasons behind fake news in sports reporting by gathering the opinions of sports reporters who actively use social media, particularly Twitter. In this context, data were collected using a semi-structured interview method with a sample of sports reporters with a significant number of followers on Twitter. The data were analyzed through Professional Data Analysis Software. According to the findings, the participants emphasized accuracy, reliability, and impartiality, reflecting professional journalism standards. They also stated that social media, particularly Twitter, provides opportunities for self-promotion, thus Twitter is a favorable platform for journalism. On the other hand, the participants' negative attitudes towards social media and Twitter are more than their positive ones. Participants cite concerns such as the acceleration of news flow, the fact that everyone is a reporter, and the rise of populism and dishonesty. According to the participants, the most important reason for the prevalence of fake news is the concern for being followed and interacted, and there is also a significant demand for fake news among readers.
