- Abstract
Genoa is the last city among the Italian maritime Republics to obtain a commercial district in Istanbul. Venice settled in the capital in 1082 and Pisa in 1111 as a result of the privileges offered by Alexius I Comnenus. Genoa settlement was only possible during the reign of Manuel Comnenus. On the other hand, it was a controversial issue when the colony of the abovementioned republic was established in Istanbul. The first negotiations between the Byzantine Empire and Genoa indicate the year 1155. However, when we examine the transmissions of the contemporary chronicles and the instructions of the ambassadors, it is clear that the date in question is impossible. The dates that emerged in the light of subsequent developments are 1162, 1169, and 1170. In this article, the developments that took place on the underscored dates were examined through the expressions of Byzantine, Venetian, Genoese, and Pisan sources. In addition, the treaties agreed between the Byzantine Empire and Genoa were compared with the statements of the witnesses mentioned. In light of the data obtained, the validity of the above-mentioned dates was questioned. Finally, it has been revealed which date is more acceptable for the foundation of the first Genoa district in Istanbul.
