- Authors
Ramón Solans, Francisco Javier
- Abstract
Miguel de Santander represents a key figure in understanding the Spanish religiosity during the crisis of the Old Regime. This well respected preacher gained importance in ecclesiastical circles in favor of Godoy so as he was promoted to the auxiliary bishopric of Zaragoza. During the French occupation, he puts his oratory skills behind the new authorities in order to legitimize the dynastic change and to promote peace. Among the reason for his collaboration is the mentality of a reforming ecclesiastic who saw the clergy as a civil servant and the monarchical institution as a way to maintain order and to ensure the development of worship.
