The article presents the author's overview on the geotechnical engineering's developments for the past years and the challenges that will be faced in the coming years in South Africa. It focuses on the industry's technical perspective rather than economic/commercial. It explores on some of the reasons for the decline of standards, design and construction practices and what needs to be done to rectify the situation.
