- Abstract
Fatigue is a commonly reported symptom of cancer. It is also reported by cancer survivors who no longer suffer from cancer. Fatigue affects quality of life and has both a physical and psychological impact on patients. The Cancer Fatigue Scale (Okuyama et al., 2000) was translated from English into Arabic by the authors, who are psychologists proficient in both languages. Back translation was used to ensure the equivalence of the two versions. The scale was given to 230 cancer patients in seven hospitals in Babylon, Iraq. A visual analog scale of fatigue was also given to the patients at the time of completing the questionnaire. Corrected item-total correlations for the items were all acceptable. The three subscales of the instrument had high Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients, as did the total scale. The correlation between the scores on the scale and the fatigue visual analogue scale was .55. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the 3-factor solution discovered by the scale developers. The Arabic version of the Cancer Fatigue Scale is valid and reliable and can be used for measuring cancer-related fatigue in Arab language populations.
