Topics explored include the enforcement of mandatory mass silence and the isolation of vocal offenders in soundproof prison cells, the way prison officials associate the voice of prisoners to disorder and crime, and the punishments imposed for noise, talking, and swearing recorded at Coldbath Fields Prison in London, England.
